In 1980, The Franciscan Sisters of the Poor extended their family to lay men and women who wished to share in the life and/or ministry of the Congregation.
Becoming an Associate is not joining a club or even a church community. The decision to make an Associate commitment with a specific community is a life decision. Making this commitment is choosing a direction from which later decisions and relationships follow. (NACAR Lead With the Spirit)
Associates strive to express the mission and charism in their role, position or ministry. Each Associate finds the best way that she/he can share this charism with others. This could be in their work: health care, non-profit organization, service in their parish, caring for family members, volunteering at one of the Franciscan Ministries or Associate Ministries, educational or business setting or a life of prayer to support the Congregations/Associates efforts through partnering with the Sisters to bring care to the poor and the needy with compassion and love: each according to his or her gifts.
Associates are men and women of all faiths and backgrounds who want to make a difference in our world.
Franciscan Sisters of the Poor Associate brochures are available from the Associate Office upon request. If a person is interested in becoming an Associate:
-the Director arranges an interview
-the Director provides background material of the history and charism of the SFP Congregation
-the person should discern to know how God is calling you
-the Director invites the person to apply to begin the Associate Orientation/Formation Sessions
